Dr. Betor offers client families a free service called Toothprint, a service he hopes they will never need. This child ID kit is the latest in child identification, providing a tooth impression, DNA sample and other identifiers to be used if a child is lost or abducted.
The centerpiece of the kit is a mouth-shaped thermoplastic wafer that Dr. Betor warms. The child then bites down on the wafer, creating a permanent impression of the individual characteristics of his teeth. The wafer also soaks up saliva, creating a DNA sample. Sealed in a zipped plastic bag as soon as it’s made, the bite splint can even provide a scent for a search dog to follow. A photo of the child is also taken, and the kit is sent home with the parents to be put in a safe place.
Initial toothprinting can be done after all primary teeth have erupted, at about age three. Impression updates are then advised at age seven, when the first permanent molars have come in, and then again at age 12, when all permanent teeth have emerged.
Not anything anyone ever wants to think about, but Dr. Betor wants his littlest patients to be protected, and their parents to be prepared. Toothprint kits are also ideal for those going off to college or traveling abroad. This powerful tool provides peace of mind.
The next time your children are in for their six-month cleaning, ask about the Toothprint Child ID Kit.
